Australia Trip Cost: Sydney and Cairns Budget for 5, 7 or 9 Days

Sydney and Cairns put pressure on different parts of a travel budget. This guide separates international airfare from AUD ground costs, then shows how five, seven and nine days change the total.

Start with ground costs, then add your international flight

An airfare from Auckland is not comparable with one from London, Los Angeles or Singapore. Search your own departure airport and keep that fare outside the daily budget until the end. Include checked baggage, seat selection, payment fees and any overnight connection—not only the headline fare.

The ranges below are planning allowances in Australian dollars, not live quotes or national averages. They assume one adult, a room shared by two people where relevant, ordinary meals, local transport and a mix of free and paid activities. Holiday dates, events and late bookings can change the total substantially.

LengthBudgetMid-rangeComfort
5 days, one cityAUD 700–1,100AUD 1,400–2,300AUD 2,700+
7 days, one or two citiesAUD 1,050–1,650AUD 2,100–3,300AUD 3,900+
9 days, two citiesAUD 1,450–2,200AUD 2,700–4,200AUD 5,000+

A two-city figure includes an allowance for a Sydney–Cairns flight and two airport transfers. Replace every allowance with a real booking total before deciding whether the trip fits your budget.

Tourism Australia’s budget guide gives useful reference points: restaurant meals can start around AUD 20, self-catering can reduce food costs, and accommodation spans hostel beds through AUD 1,000-plus luxury stays. The range is too wide for one honest “average”, which is why a booking-based worksheet is more useful.

When we shopped in central Cairns in April 2026, we compared fruit, vegetables, bread and drinks before buying. Preparing breakfast and drinks did not turn the trip into a self-catering holiday; it simply left more of the day’s allowance for dinner after a tour.

Once dates are fixed, compare the full stay total rather than a nightly teaser price. Agoda’s Australia accommodation search is one place to check live room availability and cancellation terms.

Accommodation: use the room total, not a generic nightly average

Tourism Australia describes hostel dorm beds from roughly AUD 20, private hostel rooms up to around AUD 85 per person, last-minute hotel rooms around AUD 100–200 and boutique hotels around AUD 250. Treat those as broad orientation only. Search your exact dates, occupancy and neighbourhood before using a number.

Our April 2026 trip showed why room facilities matter. In Sydney, Pullman Sydney Hyde Park put us within walking distance of several central sights. In Cairns, we split the stay between The Benson Hotel and Il Palazzo Boutique Apartments.

The apartment’s kitchen and washing machine changed food and laundry spending, while the central hotels reduced local transport. Our Benson Hotel review and Il Palazzo apartment review show what each setup actually included. A cheaper room outside the centre is not automatically cheaper once taxis, buses and time are added.

Choose a city budget

Sydney budget: accommodation and meals usually lead

For a mid-range Sydney plan, we would start with roughly AUD 220–330 per person per day before international flights. That allows for half of a shared central room, meals, public transport and one or two paid experiences across the stay. It is a worksheet range, so replace it with live totals.

Staying by Hyde Park kept several walks and city sights close. You can see the room, breakfast and rooftop facilities in our Pullman Sydney Hyde Park review, then compare Pullman’s live Agoda rates for your dates.

Circular Quay and The Rocks put the harbour at the door, but waterfront rooms can cost more. If the view is the reason for the trip, price it deliberately; if not, compare a hotel near Town Hall, Hyde Park or Central and use public transport to reach the harbour.

Central and Surry Hills can work well for intercity trains, casual dining and city access. Compare the walk to the station, late-night route and any airport transfer rather than choosing by postcode alone.

Sydney Central Station, a useful landmark when choosing accommodation

For ordinary Opal-network travel, Transport for NSW currently caps adult contactless or Opal travel at AUD 19.30 from Monday to Thursday, AUD 9.65 on Fridays, weekends and public holidays, and AUD 50 per week. The Sydney Airport station access fee is extra, so budget the airport train separately. Our Sydney Airport transport guide compares that train with taxis and booked transfers.

Cairns budget: tours can cost more than local transport

Central Cairns is compact, and both Cairns Esplanade Lagoon and the Cairns Night Markets are free to enter. The larger decisions are usually a Great Barrier Reef day, a Kuranda day and the style of accommodation.

A Green Island trip adds the cruise and any lunch, snorkelling or semi-submersible upgrade. Our Green Island cruise review shows what our Big Cat day included, while the Skyrail and Kuranda Scenic Railway report explains the transport and village time behind that day’s price.

For a marina departure, Shangri-La The Marina Cairns is beside the Reef Fleet Terminal. The Reef Hotel Casino and DoubleTree by Hilton Cairns are other central properties worth comparing by the places you plan to walk.

Near Cairns Central, supermarkets and the railway station help with food shopping and a Kuranda departure. That can matter more than a sea view if the trip includes an early train and several self-catered meals.

If a kitchen and laundry would replace several paid meals or services, check Il Palazzo’s apartment rates. For a hotel-style stay, compare them with The Benson Hotel’s live rates. Our first-hand reviews explain the practical difference between the two.

Sydney and Cairns together: allow seven days at minimum

Tourism Australia advises travellers with a week or less to focus on one or at most two cities. For Sydney and Cairns, five days is better spent in one city; otherwise a domestic flight, two airport journeys and a hotel change consume too much of the visit.

We flew Jetstar between Cairns and Sydney in about three scheduled hours. The budget also needed checked baggage, a taxi from the hotel, time at the domestic terminal and transport after landing. Our Cairns–Sydney Jetstar review shows the full airport sequence.

Sample five-, seven- and nine-day itineraries

Five days: choose Sydney or Cairns

In Sydney, combine the Sydney Opera House, The Rocks, the Royal Botanic Garden and a Blue Mountains day by train. Free harbour walks balance a paid tour.

In Cairns, allow separate days for Green Island and Kuranda, then keep the Lagoon and Night Markets for arrival or recovery time. A tour-heavy Cairns stay may cost more than its compact centre suggests.

Seven days: one city slowly or both cities compactly

A three-night split in each city is possible, but each side needs one priority experience. Decide whether that is the Blue Mountains, a harbour activity, Green Island or Kuranda before buying flights. A central day can also combine the Opera House with the Queen Victoria Building without another paid tour.

Nine days: four nights in each city

Four nights on each side gives the most balanced version of this route. Weather can still disrupt reef or rainforest plans, so avoid putting every high-cost activity on consecutive non-refundable bookings.

Turn planning ranges into your real total

  1. Record the international return fare from your own airport, including extras.
  2. Price the full accommodation stay for the same dates and guests.
  3. Add Sydney–Cairns flights and both airport transfers if visiting both.
  4. Choose two or three priority activities and record their checkout totals.
  5. Add food and local transport by day, then a 10–15% contingency.

Compare tours on the same date, group size, operator, language and inclusions. Our GetYourGuide and KKday comparison for Cairns explains why two listings with similar titles can produce different checkout totals.

Entry paperwork also belongs in the preparation list, even when it costs nothing at the border. The Australia Incoming Passenger Card guide covers the address and declaration details to save before flying.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a trip to Australia cost?

For Sydney and Cairns, our planning ranges start around AUD 700–1,100 per person for a budget five-day stay and AUD 1,400–2,300 for a mid-range stay, excluding international flights. Replace the allowances with live prices for your dates.

Is five days enough for Australia?

Yes for one city and a nearby day trip. Splitting five days between Sydney and Cairns adds too much airport and hotel-change time.

How long do I need for Sydney and Cairns together?

Seven days is compact. Nine days gives each city about four nights and more room for the Blue Mountains, Green Island or Kuranda.

Should international flights be included in the budget?

Price them separately because the departure country, season, route and baggage create a much larger variation than local daily costs.

Is Sydney or Cairns more expensive?

Sydney often puts more pressure on accommodation and dining. Cairns can have lower local transport costs in the centre, but reef and rainforest tours can become the largest expense.

Summary

There is no single useful price for an Australia holiday without dates, departure country and travel style. Keep international airfare separate, build the ground budget in AUD and replace each allowance with the final booking total.

Five days suits one city; seven days makes a compact Sydney–Cairns trip possible; nine days gives both places room. Protect the experiences that matter most, then adjust accommodation, meals and free sightseeing around them.
