Kuranda Skyrail and Scenic Railway Day Trip from Cairns
We rode Skyrail over the rainforest, spent three hours exploring Kuranda Village and returned to Cairns on the Scenic Railway. This is how the hotel pickup, stops and full day worked for our family.

Our route in April 2026—and the temporary route now
We made this trip on 11 April 2026, the morning we arrived in Cairns. Our route was hotel pickup, Smithfield Terminal, Skyrail to Kuranda, free time in the village and the afternoon Scenic Railway back to Cairns Station.
Current operating note: as checked on 8 September 2026, Skyrail is running a temporary Kuranda–Barron Falls loop from Wednesday to Sunday, with shuttles between Smithfield and Kuranda, until 25 October. Our photographs show the normal full cableway journey before the upgrade work. Check the Skyrail upgrade page for the route on your date.
For current availability, GetYourGuide lists a Kuranda Skyrail and Scenic Railway day tour with Cairns hotel transfers. It is an English-hosted product, but the operator may amend the order or substitute transport while work is under way.
Check Kuranda tour datesWhy this day mattered to our family
My parents travelled with us, and the Scenic Railway had been on my father's wish list for years. Reaching it together made this more than a convenient excursion from Cairns.
We stayed at The Benson Hotel Cairns. It was too early to check in, so we left our luggage and walked towards the Esplanade for breakfast.

The waterfront was already bright and warm. Our Cairns Esplanade Lagoon guide shows what this free city pool is like later in the day.

A hot coffee helped after the overnight flight, while the meal gave us enough energy for a long day above and through the rainforest.

Doing Kuranda on an arrival day is possible, but only if the flight and luggage plans leave a safe buffer. Our Cairns arrival report explains the airport-to-city part of the morning.
Hotel pickup on the Cairns waterfront
Our pickup was outside what was then called Pullman Reef Hotel Casino at 9:30 am. The property is now presented as The Reef Hotel Casino Cairns – Handwritten Collection, so travellers may see a different hotel name from our 2026 voucher.

We arrived early enough to walk beside the water rather than wait inside the hotel.

The pickup coach arrived outside the nominated hotel and collected travellers from several central stops.

Inside, it felt like a normal sightseeing coach. We kept the booking confirmation ready on a phone in case staff needed to see it again.

Another commonly listed pickup point is DoubleTree by Hilton Cairns. Use the exact place and time printed on your own voucher rather than assuming every departure uses these hotels.
Riding Skyrail above the Wet Tropics rainforest
At Smithfield Terminal, staff directed us from the coach to the gondola queue. Under normal operations, the cableway runs about 7.5 kilometres to Kuranda with stops at Red Peak and Barron Falls.

The gondola climbed quickly above the trees, opening a view back across Cairns, the coast and the forested ranges.

I am not especially comfortable with heights, but the gondola felt steady enough for the view to outweigh the nerves. At Red Peak we left the cabin and walked beneath the canopy.

The scale of the trees was easier to understand from the forest floor than from the gondola. Our detailed guide follows the boarding process, both intermediate stations and the current operating caveat.
Three hours in Kuranda Village
After leaving Skyrail, we walked into Kuranda Village for lunch, shops and a wildlife visit. The centre is compact enough to explore on foot.

The streets led between cafés, galleries and small shops rather than one enclosed shopping centre.

We spent the largest part of our free time browsing souvenirs and visiting Kuranda Koala Gardens.

Three hours covered lunch, a family koala photograph and a relaxed look through the shops. Anyone adding Birdworld, the butterfly sanctuary or Rainforestation should choose a longer itinerary.
Returning on the Kuranda Scenic Railway
We reached Kuranda Station in time for the afternoon train. Unlike Skyrail's aerial view, the railway moves beside rainforest, rock faces and waterfalls.

The classic exterior and slow pace make the train part of the sightseeing rather than a fast transfer.

The timber-lined carriage was the moment my father's long-planned journey became real.

We arrived at Cairns Station and walked back to The Benson Hotel rather than arranging another transfer. The railway guide below covers current fares, departure times, boarding and the best parts of the view.

Compare dates and inclusionsFrequently asked questions
Can you ride Skyrail and the Scenic Railway on the same day?
Yes. We travelled up on Skyrail and back on the railway in April 2026. Upgrade work can alter the cableway portion, so check your date before booking.
Was an arrival-day tour too tiring?
We were short of sleep, but leaving our bags at the hotel, eating breakfast and using a fixed pickup kept the day manageable. A delayed flight would have made the same plan risky.
Was three hours in Kuranda enough?
It was enough for lunch, shops and Kuranda Koala Gardens. It would not have been enough to add every wildlife attraction and Rainforestation without rushing.
Where did the train finish?
Our train ended at Cairns Station, close to Cairns Central and within walking distance of several city hotels.
Summary
Skyrail and the Scenic Railway gave us two genuinely different views of the Wet Tropics, with Kuranda Village between them. The transfer package also removed several decisions from a day when we had just arrived in Cairns.
The lasting part was taking my parents on the train my father had talked about for years. Check the temporary Skyrail route first, then choose the direction, pickup and village time that match your own day.
