Il Palazzo Boutique Apartments Cairns Review: Rooms, Location and Pool

We stayed at Il Palazzo in central Cairns as a family of three. Its separate bedroom, kitchen and laundry made the apartment feel better suited to a longer stay than our single night.

Our one-night stay at Il Palazzo in April 2026

We checked in on 18 April 2026 after travelling from Sydney to Cairns and taking a taxi from T2. The layout felt more like a small city apartment than a conventional hotel room, with enough space for our family and luggage.

A central location near the lagoon and Night Markets

Il Palazzo sits one block back from the Cairns Esplanade. We could walk to Cairns Night Markets, continue towards the waterfront and reach the lagoon without arranging transport.

The property is at 62 Abbott Street. Its position is easy to check on Google Maps.

Cairns Esplanade Lagoon, a short walk from Il Palazzo

We swam at the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon during the day and returned to the waterfront after dark. Being able to change at the apartment between those visits made the location particularly useful.

The apartment had room to live, not only sleep

The entrance opened into a combined dining and living area. Even with three suitcases, we did not feel that the room had become a luggage store.

The living room gave us a sofa and television away from the bedroom. After a day outside in Cairns, we could sit together without using the beds as our only seating.

A separate dining table gave us somewhere to spread out drinks and simple food brought back to the apartment.

The apartment also had a balcony. We only stayed one night, but the extra living space would be more valuable over several days.

A separate bedroom and useful storage

The bedroom was separated from the living room. One person could sleep while someone else sorted luggage or planned the next day without keeping the whole apartment awake.

Wardrobe space helped keep clothes and suitcases out of the main room. That distinction matters more on a multi-stop trip, when bags are opened and repacked several times.

Kitchen and in-room laundry

Our apartment had a kitchen with a refrigerator and microwave. We could store drinks and breakfast items rather than eating every meal outside.

The washing machine and dryer were inside the apartment. After travelling between Sydney and Cairns, being able to wash clothes without waiting in a shared laundry was one of the most practical features.

Il Palazzo currently describes its accommodation as self-catered one-bedroom apartments, but layouts and appliances vary. Check the description and photos for the exact room you intend to book.

Bathroom and bathtub in our apartment

Our bathroom had a shower and bathtub. The bath was welcome after walking in the tropical heat, although travellers who require one should confirm it against the selected room rather than assuming every apartment has the same layout.

Courtyard pool and compact common areas

The building wraps around an open atrium and courtyard, giving the smaller property a different atmosphere from a large chain hotel.

The outdoor pool sits inside that courtyard. We focused on the apartment and nearby waterfront during our short stay, but the pool adds an easy option for a slower afternoon.

Reception hours require some planning

Il Palazzo is not staffed like a large hotel with a reception desk operating around the clock. The property's current contact page lists reception from 8 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday, and 8 am to noon on weekends and public holidays.

After-hours self check-in is available when arranged in advance. The lobby has a small place to sit, but an open common area does not mean staff will be available to store luggage or solve an arrival problem.

If you arrive early, leave late or need luggage storage, contact the property before travel rather than assuming staff will be present. Check the latest reception and arrival information on the hotel's website.

The property also says its basic WiFi can be patchy and is not intended for streaming or conference calls. Travellers who need reliable internet for work should plan another connection.

Arriving from Cairns Airport by taxi

We arrived on a domestic flight from Sydney and took a taxi from Cairns Airport T2 straight to the hotel entrance. With three people and several suitcases, the direct ride avoided changing vehicles in the city.

Who we think Il Palazzo suits

Il Palazzo made the most sense to us as a base for families, couples or longer stays where a kitchen, laundry and separate living room matter. Its location also suits travellers who want to walk to the lagoon, marina, restaurants and Night Markets.

Travellers who prefer 24-hour reception, extensive resort facilities or uninterrupted hotel WiFi may be happier elsewhere. Before deciding, compare the available Il Palazzo room types and booking conditions for your dates.

We would choose it for several nights rather than another single-night stop. The apartment facilities become more useful each time you prepare a simple meal, wash clothes or return from the waterfront to change.

Summary

Il Palazzo gave our family much more room than a standard hotel bedroom, with a separate bedroom, living area, kitchen and laundry. Its central Cairns location let us walk to the lagoon, Night Markets and waterfront.

The shorter reception hours and basic WiFi deserve attention before booking. If those conditions fit your plans, the apartment layout is particularly useful for a multi-night stay.
