Cairns Night Markets: Dinner, Souvenirs and Opening Hours
We went to Cairns Night Markets for dinner and a look through the souvenir stalls. Here is what the food court, prices and walk by the waterfront were like.
Cairns Night Markets opening hours and location
Cairns Night Markets is an indoor market between the Esplanade and Abbott Street in central Cairns. When we visited in April 2026, it was busy with people having dinner and browsing the stalls into the evening.
The market's official hours page currently lists the following regular hours. Individual food counters and shops may open at different times, so check the signs when you arrive.

The roof makes it a useful evening stop when it is raining or the day's heat is still hanging around. The food court sits alongside rows of souvenir, clothing and service businesses.
Dinner at the food court
We chose food from Thai and Vietnamese-style counters. At several shops, you pick dishes from the display and the staff fill a takeaway container.
There were noodles, stir-fries, meat and vegetable dishes, so each person in our family could choose something different and share it at the food court tables.
The signs we saw in April 2026 showed three container prices: A$15.90, A$17.90 and A$19.90. Prices and the number of choices vary by counter, so treat these as a record of our visit rather than today's menu.
The smallest container was enough for us. Before ordering, it helps to watch how generously each counter fills the boxes.
Browsing the souvenir stalls
After dinner, we walked through stalls selling clothing, jewellery and small gifts. We found it better to make one circuit before returning to anything that stood out.
Some stalls displayed colourful prints and artwork based on Cairns wildlife and the coast. Even when we were only looking, this part felt different from browsing standard airport or supermarket souvenirs.
For fragile or larger pieces, check the size and weight before deciding whether they will travel safely in your luggage. Your destination country may also restrict some natural materials, so ask what an item is made from before buying it.
The centre also had food counters, massage businesses and other services. It felt more like a compact evening arcade than a souvenir hall alone.
Tim Tam and food souvenirs
We also bought Tim Tam chocolate biscuits during the trip. They come in many flavours and fit into a suitcase more easily than a fragile souvenir, but supermarkets can have a wider choice than the market.
Chocolate softens quickly in Cairns weather. We bought it near the end of the day rather than carrying it in the sun for hours.
Walking from the Esplanade Lagoon
The markets are a short walk from Cairns Esplanade Lagoon. We swam during the day, returned to our accommodation to change, then came back for dinner and the lagoon lights.
