Australia's seasons are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere. Sydney follows the familiar four-season pattern, while Cairns in Tropical North Queensland is more useful to plan around its wet and dry seasons.

How we planned Sydney in April

We visited Sydney in April 2026. Some afternoons were warm enough for a T-shirt, but wind by the harbour and cooler evenings made a light jacket useful. We mixed outdoor walks with indoor visits so a change in the sky did not undo the day's plan.

On the same day, we walked through the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and then joined an indoor Sydney Opera House tour. Combining an outdoor walk with an indoor booking gave us room to adjust when sunshine and cloud alternated.

On another evening, the wind felt cooler during our Sydney Harbour sightseeing cruise, so carrying a light outer layer was useful even after a warm afternoon.

April can feel different between midday and evening. Layers that fit in a day bag, plus an indoor museum or gallery option, gave us an easy way to adjust the itinerary to the weather.

Cairns weather by month: wet and dry seasons

• Wet season, November to April: hotter, more humid and much wetter, with tropical storms possible.
• Dry season, May to October: lower rainfall, cooler nights and less humidity.

The dry season is the simplest choice for reef and rainforest days because average rainfall is lower. A wet-season visit can still include clear periods, but leave room to move a boat or outdoor booking if conditions change.

What to pack for Cairns

• Breathable, quick-drying clothes throughout the year.
• A compact umbrella or light waterproof layer during the wet season.
• A dry bag or waterproof pouch for boat and rainforest days.
• Sun protection, plus any protective clothing required by your reef operator.

How we planned Cairns in April

Our April 2026 visit came near the end of Cairns' wet season. We kept our Green Island day trip and Kuranda Skyrail and railway day on separate dates instead of relying on one packed outdoor schedule.

Green Island still brought blue sky and time in the sea. Monthly rainfall averages do not mean that every day will be wet, but the operator's same-day marine advice matters more than a holiday photograph.

We also rode Skyrail on the Kuranda day. Weather can differ between central Cairns, the coast and the ranges, so we checked the destination forecast as well as the city forecast.

Choosing months for both cities

March to May

Sydney moves into mild autumn weather. Cairns is leaving the wet season, with average rainfall dropping sharply between April and May.

June to August

Cairns has its lowest average rainfall, while Sydney is at its coolest. This suits a reef-focused trip if you are comfortable packing warmer layers for Sydney.

September and October

Sydney is warming through spring and Cairns is in the latter part of the dry season. These months offer one of the clearest compromises for a two-city itinerary.

November to February

Sydney has summer weather while Cairns moves into its wet season. Keep more flexibility around Cairns boat and rainforest plans.

The tables use long-term averages for Sydney Observatory Hill and Cairns Aero. The Sydney station series ended in 2020, but it remains a long historical record for central Sydney. Cairns Aero is an operating station.
