Kuranda Scenic Railway Guide: Fares, Timetable and Journey
We returned from Kuranda to Cairns on the historic Scenic Railway. Here are the fares, current timetable, stations and boarding details, followed by every stage of our photographed journey.

Route, stations and what the journey is like
Kuranda Scenic Railway links Cairns Railway Station with Kuranda Station through the Wet Tropics rainforest. It is a sightseeing train rather than the quickest way between the two places: the line crosses bridges, traces rock faces and pauses at Barron Falls.
We travelled downhill from Kuranda after exploring the village. Travellers can also start in Cairns, or combine one rail journey with the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway for two different views of the rainforest.
Our full day included hotel pickup, Skyrail to Kuranda, village time and the railway back to Cairns. The linked trip report puts the train into the complete door-to-door itinerary.
Fares, tickets and current timetable
The official Heritage Class one-way fare for the 2026–27 season is A$58 per adult and A$29 per child. Gold Class and packages with Skyrail or transfers have different prices, so compare the class, direction and inclusions rather than the headline price alone.
As checked on 8 September 2026, the railway lists a temporary timetable through 20 September: Cairns departures at 8:45 am and 9:30 am, and Kuranda departures at 2:45 pm and 3:30 pm. Its advertised regular timetable starts Cairns services at 8:30 am and 9:30 am, with Kuranda returns at 2:00 pm and 3:30 pm. Weather and maintenance can change services, so use the official Kuranda Scenic Railway timetable for your date.
For a combined day, GetYourGuide lists an English-hosted Kuranda Skyrail and Scenic Railway tour with Cairns hotel transfers. Skyrail upgrade work can alter the order or replace part of the cableway, so read the final operator itinerary.

Cairns Railway Station is attached to Cairns Central Shopping Centre, making it convenient for city-centre stays. This is the platform area we saw after completing the return journey.
Kuranda Station sits below the village among tropical gardens. Its entrance and footbridge feel like part of the heritage attraction before the train even arrives.
Our package collected us from central Cairns in the morning. Pickup hotels included the property formerly known as Pullman Reef Hotel Casino, now presented as The Reef Hotel Casino Cairns – Handwritten Collection, and DoubleTree by Hilton Cairns.
Hotel lists and times can change. Use the exact address on your voucher and arrive early enough to distinguish your operator from other coaches using the same stop.
Whether you arrive from the village or Skyrail, allow at least 30 minutes before the listed train departure. The station is worth seeing slowly, but the train will not wait for a delayed village visit.
Boarding and the Heritage Class carriage
The maroon carriages and railway lettering make the service easy to recognise on the platform.
Staff directed passengers to the numbered carriage shown on their ticket. We kept our family together and boarded once the platform announcement was made.
Heritage Class has paired bench seating, timber trim and large windows. It is comfortable enough for the two-hour ride, but it is not a modern intercity train.
The windows are the main attraction. Sitting on one side does not guarantee every view because the track changes direction; passengers naturally look across the carriage when the best scenery appears.
At Barron Falls, the train stopped long enough for passengers to leave the carriage and walk to the platform viewpoint.
April followed the wet season, so the gorge was green and the falls were still a prominent part of the landscape.
Back on board, the line passed smaller waterfalls close to the carriage. The slow speed gave us time to see details that are hidden from the cableway above.
The broad curves reveal the train itself across the rainforest. This was the classic view my father had wanted to see.
Farther downhill, the view opened towards Cairns and the coast. Skyrail had shown the canopy from above; the train showed how the railway was built into the mountainside.
We arrived at Cairns Station in the late afternoon and left the train with the main city centre close by.
From the station, we walked back to our hotel instead of waiting for another transfer.
That city-centre finish is useful when comparing packages: some end at the station, while others include a coach back to nominated hotels.
Planning your time in Kuranda Village
The railway is only one part of the day. We kept enough time before departure to browse the village rather than heading straight from Skyrail to the station.
Our family priority was Kuranda Koala Gardens, where we booked a koala photograph after entering the wildlife park.
We also browsed small market stalls for lightweight souvenirs before walking to the station.

- Choose Cairns-to-Kuranda, Kuranda-to-Cairns or a return journey deliberately.

- Allow at least 30 minutes at the station before departure.

- Leave enough village time for lunch and any timed wildlife experience.

Our multigenerational family completed it comfortably. The main considerations are almost two hours of seated travel, station access and walking during the Barron Falls stop.
