Skyrail Rainforest Cableway Guide: Cairns to Kuranda
We travelled above the Wet Tropics rainforest on Skyrail from Smithfield to Kuranda. Here is the route, transfer, booking confirmation and what we saw at Red Peak and Barron Falls.

Current Skyrail upgrade and our April 2026 journey
Our photographs and experience are from 11 April 2026, when the full cableway ran from Smithfield Terminal to Kuranda via Red Peak and Barron Falls.
Checked 8 September 2026: the Smithfield line is being upgraded. Until 25 October, Skyrail says it is operating a Kuranda–Barron Falls loop from Wednesday to Sunday and providing shuttles between Smithfield and Kuranda. Read the current upgrade notice before choosing a ticket.
GetYourGuide lists a Skyrail and Scenic Railway tour with Cairns hotel transfers. The product is hosted in English, but the operator may change the direction or transport while the upgrade is under way.
Normal route and stops
Under normal operations, Skyrail covers about 7.5 kilometres between Smithfield and Kuranda. Travellers leave the gondola at two intermediate stations and board another cabin when ready.
- Smithfield Terminal: the Cairns-side terminal
- Red Peak: rainforest boardwalks and ranger interpretation
- Barron Falls: gorge lookouts, displays and The Edge
- Kuranda Terminal: the village-side terminal
We paired the outward Skyrail journey with the afternoon Kuranda Scenic Railway. That showed us the same landscape from above the canopy and beside the mountainside.
Our ticket and booking confirmation
Our package combined city pickup, Skyrail, free time in Kuranda and the train back to Cairns. After booking, Skyrail emailed a separate “Booking Confirmation” showing the pickup point, meeting time and transport sequence.
We saved the document to a phone before leaving the hotel. Staff checked it when we boarded the transfer coach, so we did not have to search through email beside the bus.
When normal operations resume, Skyrail's official combination page lists self-drive and Cairns pickup options. The official ticket page is the best place to compare directions and see whether the railway is included.

Our booking allowed about 1.5 hours for the normal one-way cableway journey with both intermediate stops. Two hours is more comfortable if you want photographs, ranger talks and every lookout.
The train departure fixed the end of our Kuranda visit, so we worked backwards from that time. A return Skyrail ticket gives a different schedule from a cableway-and-rail package.
Getting from Cairns to Smithfield Terminal
Smithfield Terminal is at 6 Skyrail Drive, roughly 15 minutes from central Cairns by car. Its position can be checked on Google Maps.
Public transport
Translink route 123 is the most direct public-bus option from the Cairns Central area towards the Skyrail base. Timetables and stop patterns change, so use the Translink journey planner for the day rather than relying on an old departure time.
Route 110 to Smithfield Shopping Centre is another possibility, but it leaves a longer walk. A taxi, rideshare or self-drive removes that transfer but still requires a plan for the opposite end if returning by train.
Hotel transfer
We waited outside the former Pullman Reef Hotel Casino, now shown as The Reef Hotel Casino Cairns – Handwritten Collection.
The driver checked passengers against the booking list before we took our seats.
DoubleTree by Hilton Cairns was another pickup option when we booked. Always use the address on the current product voucher, as hotel names and pickup lists can change.
Boarding at Smithfield
At Smithfield, the coach stopped close to the check-in area. We followed staff directions and kept the booking confirmation available.
The queue moved towards the continuous-loading gondolas rather than a platform with one fixed departure.
Staff showed each group when to enter. The cabin rose above the terminal within moments.
The first section opened a wide view over the canopy towards the Cairns coast.
Although I do not love heights, the cabin felt steady. Farther along, the Barron River appeared between dense forest.
The change from coastal views to river and mountain scenery made the journey feel like more than transport to Kuranda.
Red Peak rainforest boardwalk
Red Peak was our first stop. We left the gondola and followed the boardwalk signs through the forest.
We spent about 20 minutes here. Ranger talks and interpretive displays give more context if their timing matches your arrival.
From below, the height of the trees felt very different from the flat green canopy seen through the gondola window.
Allow enough time to walk rather than moving directly to the next cabin. This stop is part of the experience, not simply an interchange.
Barron Falls and gorge views
Barron Falls was the second intermediate station on our full-route journey.
Water volume changes by season. In April, the waterfall was clearly visible across the gorge.
The lookout gives a broad view rather than placing you close to the water. We also saw the railway appear across the rainforest.
Seeing the train from above made the return journey feel connected to the landscape we had just crossed by gondola.
Arriving in Kuranda Village
After leaving the terminal, we walked towards the village centre for lunch and several hours of independent sightseeing.
We chose Kuranda Koala Gardens as our main paid stop and took a family photograph with a koala.
Afterwards, we browsed small shops and the colourful storefronts around the markets.

Booking checklist
- Check the cableway section actually operating on your date.
- Compare self-drive, public transport and hotel-transfer options.
- Confirm which direction uses Skyrail and where the return train ends.
- Leave time for both intermediate stations when the full route is running.
- Read the voucher for pickup changes and the cancellation deadline.
A combination product removes the separate transfer and rail bookings, but it also fixes more of the day. Read the full itinerary rather than comparing price alone.

Summary
The full Skyrail journey gave us coastal views, rainforest boardwalks and Barron Gorge before we even reached Kuranda. A hotel-transfer package also worked well on our arrival day.
The 2026 upgrade temporarily changes that experience, so confirm the live route first. Once normal operations resume, allow enough time for Red Peak and Barron Falls instead of treating Skyrail as a simple ride between terminals.
