Sydney Airport describes a network of more than 50 international airports. Cairns Airport’s current route map lists international services across Asia, the Pacific and New Zealand, along with domestic flights to Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and other Australian destinations.

Non-stop, direct or connecting?
A non-stop flight travels from the departure airport to the arrival airport without landing in between. A flight sold as direct may keep one flight number but still stop en route. A connecting itinerary requires you to change flights.

Flying into Sydney
Sydney is usually the easiest first search when you are coming from Europe, North America, the Middle East or an Asian city without a Cairns service. Its wider international network gives you more airline and connection combinations.
From Sydney Airport, the city is reached by train, taxi, rideshare or pre-booked transfer. Terminals T2 and T3 handle domestic flights, while T1 is international, so a domestic connection may require a terminal transfer after immigration and customs.
Flying into Cairns
Cairns is the more convenient arrival when Tropical North Queensland is the focus and a suitable service operates from your region. Cairns Airport’s 2026 route network includes Singapore, Bali, Tokyo, Osaka, Port Moresby, Fiji and New Zealand services, with some routes seasonal.
If there is no suitable non-stop service, compare a connection through an overseas hub with an international arrival elsewhere in Australia followed by a domestic flight. The best answer depends on total time, ticket protection, baggage and fare—not simply the number of flight sectors.
Cairns Airport is about 7 kilometres from the CBD. There is no passenger train from the terminal, so plan a taxi, rideshare, shuttle or private transfer before arrival.
Connecting between Sydney and Cairns
Domestic flights link Sydney and Cairns. When we flew the route in April 2026, it was a practical way to combine the harbour city with the reef and rainforest in one trip.
